Ota City of Japan has donated various relief items to people who were affected by March 2019 Cyclone Idai-induced floods.

Speaking in Lilongwe on Tuesday (3rd December, 2019) when she symbolically handed over the donation, which include school bags, cups and trampolines, Japanese Ambassador to Malawi, Kae Yanagisawa said the donation signifies the cordial relationship that exists between the people of Malawi and Japan.

In his remarks, Vice President and Minister responsible for Disaster Management Affairs, Everton Herbert Chimulirenji, who received the donation on behalf of the Malawi Government and the affected people, said Malawi appreciates the technical and financial support rendered to it by the Government of Japan in the area of disaster risk management and humanitarian response.

Said Chimulirenji: “Following the March 2019 floods, Japan through the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) quickly responded to the appeal for assistance and supported affected households in some affected districts with shelter and non- food items namely family tents, tarpaulins and blankets, just to mention a few.”
